The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning

You don't have to be a ballet dancer or professional athlete to gain the strength, grace and flexibility that Pilates affords. Everyone, whether you're currently in or out of shape, or whether you suffer from arthritis or other injuries can benefit from Pilates. Concentration and a commitment to seeing results are all that is required. Concentration, in fact, is one of the six principles on which Pilates is based. The other five principles are centering, control, precision, breathe and flow. There are two ways to do Pilates. You can choose to work one-on-one with certified instructors or participate in-group mat classes. Either way, the system blends the best Eastern and Western techniques to help you build long, supple muscles that help you enhance your posture.

Benefits of Pilates:

Slenderizes the thighs and helps the body "defy" gravity. Participants say they leave the studio feeling energized, not tired; centered, not scattered. Sessions are personalized; it's recommended that the practitioner take two individual sessions and one group MAT class each week. It corrects known underlying flexibility imbalances, and by having normal flexibility around the joints, practitioners are less likely to pull a muscle. Another advantage Pilates offers is that people with painful physical conditions can still participate in and benefit from the exercises. Physical therapists are using the Pilates Method to rehabilitate people with arthritis, osteoporosis and other conditions.
